Many years ago, my then four-year-old son endearingly referred to the Forefathers Monument, which is located just steps away from our house, as the “Four Dads Monument”.
The Forefathers Monument, as we know, honors the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower. It is comprised of a central statue, (“Faith”), surrounded by four ancillary statues (“Morality”, “Law”, “Education” and “Liberty”). Today, an osprey nest has formed atop Faith’s head, fortuitously forming what might be viewed as a crown of thorns, the Christian symbol of suffering evoking the crucifixion of Jesus.
Nature has thus provided a joining of patriot values with religious values, ennobling them both.
