David “Dave” Thomas Ahearn, age 81, passed away suddenly on Jan. 25 at his home in Plymouth. Born to the late Esther Donelan Ahearn, Dave and his younger sister Julie were born and raised in Brighton. He graduated from St. Columbkille School in Brighton, where he played baseball and met the love of his life, Mary Frances McCain. He earned a B.S. in Accounting from Bentley University. His long accounting career began at Honeywell and continued at Kendall Company (a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive), which became International Paper, and from where he retired as a controller. In addition, Dave spent over 40 years serving as lead controller for his nephews’ veterinary business. He held that role, which he took great pride in, until his passing.
Dave and Mary raised their two daughters in West Roxbury for over 20 years before moving to Severna Park, Maryland, where they lived until they built a home in Sagamore Beach. They eventually settled in Plymouth at White Cliffs Country Club, where he enjoyed golf, card nights, and socializing with family and friends.
In addition to being an avid golfer, Dave was the ultimate sports fan, known to cheer on his beloved Red Sox. His greatest devotion and achievement was his cherished family. He took the greatest joy from his daughters’ achievements and his grandchildren’s interests and successes. He was always present loudly applauding his grandchildren at sporting events and graduations. His loving relationship with his only sibling, Julie, provided him with companionship and love throughout his entire life.
Dave’s fondest childhood memories were in Holderness, New Hampshire, and his happiest times as a father and grandfather were summers and family events in Sagamore Beach. He will most be remembered for his fierce and loving loyalty, wise counsel, and his huge laugh and personality. His affable disposition and kind generosity are what made Dave the most loved and sought out person in every room.
He leaves behind his wife, Mary Frances, his daughter Jennifer Leire, and husband Tom, of Boxford; his daughter Jane Redman, and husband Jeff, of Sagamore Beach; grandchildren Thomas Donelan Leire, Jake Sevren Leire, John Ahearn Redman, Caroline Elisabeth Leire, and Andrew David Redman; his sister Julie Curran, and husband Rich, of Norfolk; and many nieces and nephews.
