Last Saturday was a wonderful example of democracy in action in our Town of Plymouth. Town Meeting members gathered to discuss and vote on financial proposals and Charter and Bylaw changes that will affect our citizens. I was impressed by the thoughtful questions, and statements of a variety of Town Meeting members which showed careful preparation and consideration of the Warrant. Each of the Capitol Improvement recommendations was considered individually with multiple questions about the needs and justifications. There was respect and civility demonstrated throughout the proceedings. Over the last few weeks each precinct met in caucuses to carefully discuss the motions, hear presentations from promoters and opponents, and ask questions of Town staff. Members weighed costs and benefits carefully, especially in light of possible looming budget deficits.

As many as 152 members out of 162 attended in person or remotely to discuss, weigh options and cast votes. They are a cross section of our town, some experienced longtime Town Meeting members and others new to their responsibility, all eager to help make decisions that will impact the economic and livability of Plymouth. Having so many eyes, minds and opinions making decisions ensures better government.
