I’m old enough to remember when activists occupied the site of the proposed nuclear power plant at Seabrook, New Hampshire, back in 1977. The arguments those men and women made against nuclear generating stations are still valid today and should be taken seriously by Governor Healey and members of her administration.
The vexing riddle of radioactive waste storage remains unsolved, and since the material is extraordinarily poisonous and very long-lasting, it’s a problem our descendants will be grappling with for millennia to come. Do we really want to leave such a toxic legacy?
Furthermore, nuclear plant construction takes decades and is notoriously prone to cost overruns. We can do better for ourselves and future generations than these centralized and unsafe power sources. Massachusetts needs to redouble its investments in clean, renewable energy to meet the needs of our society while rising to the challenges of the climate crisis.
