There’s a little more space on Sandwich Street these days – temporarily.

The Canaan Fuels gas station/convenience street complex at the intersection of Lincoln and South streets has shuttered as a complete rebuild of the site gets underway.

The first phase of the project involved the recent razing of an office building on the property that looked more like a split-level home in need of a refresh. For years, well-known attorney Jack Atwood worked out of the space. The 3,360-square-foot building’s removal will allow for the construction of a more modern facility similar to – but smaller than – those on Long Pond Road and in other parts of town.

The existing convenience store will be torn down, too, replaced by a 2,000-square-foot building.  (The current one is about 500 square feet.) Plans call for six pumps – the same number the old station had – along with 18 parking spaces.

Town officials said they do not expect the new facility to significantly increase traffic at the busy intersection.

According to Canaan’s website, the company has eight locations, mostly in Southeastern Massachusetts. It’s unclear when the new Plymouth station will be completed. A company spokesperson could not be reached for comment, despite several attempts.
