Edward James O’Connor, Jr., of Plymouth, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, Sept. 30. He was 91.
Born Dec. 9, 1934, in Boston to the late Edward James O’Connor and Agnes (MacNeil) Crealese, he grew up in Brockton and was a 1954 graduate of Brockton High School, and then Massasoit Community College. He served in the U.S. Reserves, then in the U.S. Army in Korea as a member of an artillery division.
Following his military service, Edward built a career in construction, helping with the construction of the VA Hospital in Brockton. He later worked as a manager for Fernandes Supermarkets and Shaw’s/Star Market.
He was a volunteer at his grandchildren’s elementary school, an active member of the Plymouth Center for Active Living, and a longtime member of St. Peter’s Church in Plymouth.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Grace (Monsini) O’Connor; children, Della M. (O’Connor) Sattin of Mashpee, Lisa O’Connor of Plymouth, Edward J. O’Connor III of Plymouth, John J. O’Connor of Plymouth, and Valerie J. Cummings and her husband, Thomas, of Augusta, GA; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister Phyllis Jezard.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Eugene O’Connor, Kevin O’Connor, Brian O’Connor, and Gregory O’Connor.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Rd. Plymouth. A burial mass will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 8 at St. Peter’s Church, Plymouth, with a 12:45 p.m. burial to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
