Curtis L. Ireland, a former Plymouth police officer and veteran of the Korean conflict. died Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Benchmark Senior Living in Plymouth. He was 90.
Born in Plymouth on Jan. 19, 1936 to the late Weldon E. and Alberta R. (Peck) Ireland., he was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of the Korean conflict. He graduated from Kingston High School, Brockton Police Academy, Babson College Training School, and Stonehill College, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
He became a Plymouth Police officer in May 1968 and retired a captain in 1997 after a successful career. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, the Plymouth Police Relief Association, Massachusetts Retired Employees Association and the Plymouth Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his son-in-law Marc Helminiak, granddaughter Shaelyn Helminiak and her fiancé Benji Brousseau of New York, and sister-in-law Jane Kelly, nephew Shawn Ireland, and nieces Kim Ireland and Heather Bumpus.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra F. (Weichel) Ireland, with whom enjoyed many years collecting antiques and vintage toys; his daughter Jane Helminiak; his brothers Robert, Stanley and Donald Ireland; and sisters-in-law Diane and Joanne Ireland.
Graveside services will be11:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 at Vine Hills Cemetery, Samoset Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Plymouth Police Relief Association, 20 Long Pond Rd., Plymouth, MA 02360.
