Plymouth County Mosquito Control will be using a truck to spray selected Plymouth streets early Monday morning, Aug. 18, according to the town’s communications coordinator, Casey Kennedy.
The ground spraying will take from 2 a.m. to shortly before dawn. The pesticide is applied with a low-volume sprayer mounted on the back of a pickup truck. It is typically done from the street and can travel up to 300 feet.
A list of streets to be sprayed can be found here.
This is the second ground spraying of the summer. The first round took place on Aug. 14 after a mosquito was found with West Nile virus in Plymouth on Aug. 5.
Residents can request that their location be sprayed or they can opt out of spraying by going to the Plymouth County Mosquito Control website.
No human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Massachusetts so far this year. Plymouth is considered at moderate risk for West Nile virus.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health recommends residents apply insect repellant when outdoors, avoid being outdoors in the evening or early morning in areas of high risk, and wear pants, long sleeves, and socks when outdoors to avoid mosquito bites. It also recommends draining standing water from properties and installing and maintaining screens.
