As the May town election approaches voters should pay close attention to the language coming from a particular town official. Recently, Select Board Member Kevin Canty described Proposition 2 1/2 as “Antiquated,” suggesting the tax revenue currently sent to Town Hall is simply not enough. He has also made other outrageous statements related to taxing our citizens.

When a candidate for re-election calls a landmark taxpayer protection “antiquated” the citizens of Plymouth deserve to know exactly what that means for their bank accounts. Does it mean the 2 1/2 cap is no longer sufficient in his eyes? Does it mean we should prepare for a significant override proposal? Both questions are a resounding, yes!

Many of us are old enough to remember the reality of life before Proposition 2 1/2 was enacted in the early 1980’s. Before those protections taxpayers faced a crushing unpredictable tax burden that threatened to tax people out of their own homes. Those of us who lived through it know the law is not antiquated it is a vital shield for residents. Especially those on fixed incomes and young families. Make no mistake, under Selectman Canty’s mindset that is exactly what will happen.

We have already seen Selectman Canty’s rigorous and caustic style of questioning, as demonstrated by his recent drilling of our Police Chief during the ICE bylaw debate. Selectman Canty is wrong for the job and therefore wrong for Plymouth. I respectfully ask the voters to vote Canty out of office.
