The ongoing discussions regarding Plymouth’s “fiscal crunch” and potential service cuts highlight a significant need for long-term clarity. While current efforts to manage the budget are evident, it is difficult for the community to fully engage without a formal three-to-five-year projection of our projected deficits.
Our neighbors in Duxbury provide a helpful example of this approach. By consistently publishing multi-year forecasts that outline revenue and expenditure trends, they offer their taxpayers a clear roadmap for the future. Implementing a similar practice here would move us toward a more proactive, collaborative approach to our town’s fiscal health.
Without this data, we are left with more questions than answers. It often feels as though the three greatest mysteries in the world today are:
- Who really shot JFK?
- Where is Jimmy Hoffa?
- What is the actual financial trajectory of Plymouth?
By releasing a clear, multi-year projection, our town could finally solve that third mystery – leaving the world with only two.
