The television ratings for Saturday’s Thanksgiving parade were probably up, thanks to a chilly rain that persuaded many people to take in the annual celebration from their living room instead of a sidewalk. But the thousands of spectators who dressed for the weather were rewarded with a spectacle of sights and sounds that unofficially ushered in the holiday season for Plymouth. (This year’s theme was the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.)

Early morning showers were supposed to let up by the 10 a.m. parade start time, but – and this has never happened before – the weather forecast was off. And just like last year, when the rain was worsened by wind gusts, the day after the parade dawned brighter. Nonetheless, most everyone seemed to be in good spirits Saturday, with the notable exception of some soggy children. The marchers, performers, and other parade participants tried to carry on as if the skies were clear and the streets dry. There was also a silver lining for those braved the elements – post-parade traffic was lighter than expected.

As he has for the last two years, photographer Jim Curran captured the scene along the route. Here’s a gallery of his pictures.
