On July 31, the Select Board, through the director of inspectional services, commendably started to play hardball with the owner of Bert’s.

Strike one was a letter to the owner pursuant to state law, ordering him to secure the
property by installing a six-foot chain-link fence around the structure within 24 hours of his receipt of the letter. The owner did this.

Strike two was a second letter to the owner pursuant to State law, ordering him to “begin
removing the dangerous building on the property by 12 p.m. on the day after receipt of
this letter.” The owner has not done this.

Strike three will be an order by the Select Board at its next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 10,
to order, because the public safety so requires, “Immediate entrance upon the
premises with the necessary workmen and assistants to cause such unsafe structure to be
taken down without delay.”
