Thomas “Tom” Charles Matthews, a carpenter and commercial fisherman with a lifelong passion for the water, died July 11 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Route 6 in Sandwich. He was 70.
Born in Weymouth on Sept. 28, 1955, to the late Henry and Doris (Nosiglia) Matthews, he was a skilled carpenter and a commercial fisherman with a lifelong passion for the water. He was a member of the John Alden Sportsmen’s Club in Manomet, American Legion Post 40 in Plymouth, and the American Legion Riders Post 40.
Family and friends remember him for his kindness, generosity, compassion, loyalty, and unwavering support of those he loved. He is also remembered for his gift of storytelling, his infectious laugh, and his great sense of humor. He enjoyed sharing a good drink, a fine cigar, and sushi with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Sara (Roth) Matthews; his children, Daniel Matthews and his wife, Caroline, of Sagamore; Holly Maxton and her husband, Chadd, of Plymouth; and Nathan Matthews of Plymouth, currently serving with the U.S. Army in Germany; and his granddaughter Abagail Matthews.
He is also survived by his brothers, Henry “Butch” Matthews and his wife, Cynthia, of Marshfield; James Matthews and his wife, Cathy, of Sagamore Beach; and John Matthews and his wife, Carolann, of Waldorf, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 18 at Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 619 State Road. A memorial service will follow. A celebration of his life will follow at 6 p.m. at the John Alden Sportsman’s Club, 16 Minuteman Lane.
