If you want an excuse to don formal attire and go out for an elegant winter evening, the1620 Winery is celebrating its 10th anniversary and holding its fourth annual Snow Ball Gala & Anniversary Celebration from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, at 55 Cordage Park Circle. Raquel Mullaney, who owns the venue with her husband Bob, said the gala was her brainchild, intended to be a highlight during the “long, cold month” of January.

“I like to dress up,” Raquel said.

The couple bought the winery 10 years ago, taking a giant risk by giving up their healthcare business. But it wasn’t out of the blue – Bob comes from a family with generations of winemakers and learned the craft from his uncles.

“Every little boy that grows up making wine dreams they can make a living out of it,” Raquel said about Bob’s passion for wine making. After 10 years, she said, it’s time to relish the results of their hard work. As someone who knew nothing about the restaurant business when she got into it, she credits an experienced staff for keeping it going.

“I didn’t realize it was going to be as popular as it is,” Raquel said of the Snow Ball. Turns out, other people like to dress up in January, too.

The event features gourmet food, wine, cocktails, beer, and dancing. Raquel said the “high energy” Silver Arrow Band should keep the dance floor full for most of the evening.

After cocktail hour, from 6 to 7 p.m., guests will enjoy a gourmet menu created by Chef Steve Dickson.

Throughout the evening, Bob’s most popular white and red wines, which are on tap, will be served. Cocktails and beer will also be available.

In honor of the winery’s 10th anniversary, Mullaney said, each guest will receive a special gift at the end of the evening.

Tickets are $145.90, and you can buy them here.
