Robert “Witzy” Wirtzburger, a Plymouth native, U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired Plymouth police officer, died peacefully on Aug.11 surrounded by his family at Benchmark Senior Living at Plymouth Crossings.
Born March 11, 1928, to the late August and Ethel (Heppleston) Wirtzburger, he graduated from Plymouth schools before serving aboard the USS Missouri during World War II. He then served more than 29 years with the Plymouth Police Department, retiring as a sergeant in 1983.
Family and friends remember him for his infectious passion for his hometown of Plymouth, his enthusiasm for Boston College football. He was a member of Little Harbor Golf Club in Wareham for nearly 40 years.
He is survived by his daughters, Joani Adams, Lisa Boehme and her husband Barry, all of Plymouth; grandchildren Alyssa Adams, Laura Marino, Jami Gallo, Jill MacPherson, Stephen Caramello, and Max Boehme; and 10 great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years Natalie (Santos) Wirtzburger; brothers Richard and Charles Wirtzburger; his son Gary Wirtzburger, and son-in-law Henry ‘Hank’ Adams.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Monday Aug. 17 at Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 373 Court St. with a service to follow. Burial will be at Vine Hills Cemetery in Plymouth.
Memorial donations may be made to Caring Hospice Services of Massachusetts or the Plymouth Boys and Girls Club.
