You’ve undoubtably seen an old appliance or furniture on a sidewalk for weeks, waiting for someone who will never come to pick it up for “free.” Or worse, you’ve been on a hike and come across a rusting refrigerator dumped in the woods.

Yes, disposing of some household items costs money, but that’s no excuse for trashing the environment. Please don’t be that person. Besides, some unwanted stuff can be put to good use.

That’s the idea behind the Recycling & Sustainability Fair scheduled for Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Plymouth North High School. You can drop off a range of items as a donation or to be recycled.

Yes, there are fees, but they’re reasonable – much lower than if you hired a private hauler, and much better than being an uncaring consumer. For example, that old fridge can be dropped off for $60, mattresses and box springs can be disposed of for $45, dishwashers, dryers, and washer/dryers for $30, and air conditioners for a measly $10. A complete list of accepted items and associated fees can be found here. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted.

For pricing on tools, exercise equipment (it’s time to admit that treadmill is never again going to be used), and beat up furniture is available by calling 508-244-0450.

Some furniture – including dining sets, coffee tables, bureaus, and home office desks will be accepted for free, if it’s in decent condition.

In addition, the fair will feature booths for environmentally oriented groups, including Sustainable Plymouth, the town’s Climate Action Committee, and the Citizens Climate Lobby.

This event is popular, so plan accordingly. Plymouth North is at 41 Obery St.
