I sent the following letter to Police Chief Dana Flynn after reading Fred Thys’s story about him urging the town to opt out of a state law that prohibits firearms in public buildings such as Town Hall: I believe your opinion of excluding Plymouth from firearms laws is very misguided.

If your concern is for the safety of the citizens of Plymouth, the police are paid to provide that professional service, not our neighbors.  You are already providing that needed service in schools.

If your goal is to make public spaces safer, I think a better way to do that would be with police officers and metal detectors rather than citizens walking the halls with weapons.

Thank you for your time.
