Each year the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women works with state legislators to identify and honor women who make outstanding contributions to their communities. According to the MCSW, these “Commonwealth Heroines are women who don’t make the news but make the difference.” Every day, thousands of women perform acts that make our homes, neighborhoods, cities, and towns better places to live. “They are mentors, volunteers, and innovators who strive to protect and represent vulnerable populations. They are the glue that keeps a community together.”

At the 2025 Annual Meeting of the League of Women Voters of the Plymouth Area, state representatives Michelle Badger and Kathy LaNatra presented long-time League member Pat McCarthy with a citation celebrating her selection as a 2025 Commonwealth Heroine. Pat has always been a strong advocate for public education and for the budget to assure that the schools have the resources that they need. Her knowledge of town governance garnered through service as a Town Meeting representative for over 20 (non-consecutive) years has made her a respected voice in local decision-making and a valuable member of the League. According to the citation, “Her impact in Plymouth is immeasurable, and her leadership. advocacy, and dedication to improving the lives of those around her make her a perfect choice for the 2025 Commonwealth Heroine Award.”

We in the League celebrate the recognition of Pat’s many accomplishments.
