I was disappointed to discover that our hometown newspaper did not cover a protest rally at the rock on Labor Day. Several hundred people showed up on a major holiday to voice their anger about the creeping authoritarianism embedded in many of the policies of the Trump administration. As one demonstrator’s sign put it, “Speak up now – while you still can!” I sure hope the Independent will send a reporter to cover the next “No Kings” rally on October 18th in order to discover why so many local residents are concerned that our democracy, economy, and standing in the world is being undermined by extremists in our government.
