A recreational vehicle plowed through the seawall on Water Street Wednesday morning, leaving a gaping hole town officials say could take several days to repair.
In the meantime, with a potential nor’easter threatening the coast this weekend, the town is installing temporary concrete barriers to protect the area, according to a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Works Director Bill Coyle.
“The DPW has contractors scheduled to repair the seawall beginning tomorrow, Sept. 24,” a statement from town officials said. “However, repairs may take several days. In the interim, concrete Jersey barriers are being installed to provide adequate protection until the permanent repairs are complete.”
The barriers will be set aside each day while repair crews work, then put back each evening until the repairs are complete, town officials said.
The vehicle is owned by Gary and Donna Sinrich of North Carolina who said they are on a road trip through the northeast.
They left Cape Cod Wednesday morning and “couldn’t leave without stopping at Plymouth Rock,” Gary Sinrich told the Independent. He said he accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.
He and his wife were uninjured, he said.
