John Marshall Madden, a former Town of Plymouth accountant, died peacefully on April 7 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a battle with cancer. He was 70.
Born in Milton on Feb. 8, 1956, John was the son of the late John Marshall Madden and Antoinette Marie (Evaska) Madden. Raised in Hull, he graduated from Hull High School in 1974 and continued his education at St. Michael’s College, graduating in 1978. While in Burlington, he met his wife, Patricia (Flaherty) Madden. Together, they built a home in Plymouth, where they raised their family.
He began his career as a town accountant in Plymouth, and in 2006 became the first-ever Finance Director for the Town of Duxbury. There, he maintained the town’s AAA bond rating for over a decade until his retirement in 2018.
He was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the Plymouth South Boosters Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Touchdown Club at Norwich University, and the St. Michael’s Club Hockey Team.
He enjoyed rugby, carpentry, cooking, skiing, and golfing—having worked as a caddy in his younger years, but cherished family trips to their cabin in Bridgton, Maine.
He is survived by his wife Patricia; his two sons Christopher Madden and his wife, Raychel, of Virginia Beach, VA, and Ryan Madden and his fiancée, Kelly, of Weymouth; grandchildren Grier, Bret, and Sloan Madden. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Madden, and his wife, Mary Helen, of Santa Fe, NM, as well as several nieces and nephews, and his loyal dog Cleveland.
A visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 at the Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Rd. in Plymouth, followed by an 11 a.m. mass at St. Bonaventure’s Church, Plymouth.
