Richard E. Holmes

Richard E. Holmes, an avid outdoorsman and retired construction worker remembered for his work ethic, died Thursday. He was 95.

Born in Plymouth on Oct. 21, 1930, he was the son of the late William B. and Elizabeth (Herries) Holmes. He grew up in Plymouth, attended local schools then served in the U.S. Army.

After years with A.K. Finney Construction and a member of the Local 4 Union, he retired at 58 and tended his cranberry bog in Carver. He also worked alongside his son at R.E. Holmes Pumping.
 
He is remembered by friends and family as a true outdoorsman with a deep love for animals—especially his dogs and horses. He enjoyed hunting, working on cars, and maintaining machinery, including a vintage 1930 Lorain cable shovel he kept in his backyard. He attended services at South Pond Chapel.
 
He is survived by his children Rebecca Holmes; Cynthia Hunter and her husband Ronald; Richard Holmes; Gordon Holmes and his significant other, Paige Gonsalves; and Priscilla Holmes, all of Plym; grandchildren Chad Hunter, Lauren Brundige, Travis Holmes, Michael Morin, and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Edwin Holmes and Sylvia Viirre.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn (McCosh) Holmes, and siblings William Holmes, Shirley Matheson, Wesley Holmes, Rosalind Holmes, Helen Hutchinson, Marcia Wall, and Stephen Holmes.
 
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 17th at the South Pond Cemetery. Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the Plymouth Veterans Fund, c/o Veterans Services, 26 Court St. Plymouth MA 02360.
