The solution to Plymouth’s runaway healthcare costs is to get Mass-Care passed into law. What is Mass-Care? A very simple explanation – Mass-Care is state level single payer healthcare. The term “single payer” is either loved or despised. Whichever “camp” you fall into, it really is the path forward.
A huge benefit for municipalities is that Mass-Care would remove contentious contract negotiations for healthcare benefits. This alone is reason for municipalities to be a vocal proponent of Mass-Care. A significant additional benefit is that everyone has the same coverage. Whether you work in the private sector or the public sector, everyone has the exact same healthcare.
No one wants more money taken from their paycheck. Definitely understandable. Very few people get fully paid health insurance, so for the vast majority of workers Mass-Care will be a wash financially and in many cases, a financial gain. The single biggest argument against a payroll contributed state run healthcare system is the legislators at the State House who have a limited grasp of fiscal common sense, have access to more of our precious money. A leap of faith indeed.
Arguments can be made back and forth over the benefits or detriments of single payer. One thing that can be universally agreed upon is that the current healthcare model is mediocre at best. It is time to go in a new direction with healthcare.
“Single payer” should really be done at the federal level but the chances of anything getting done there are close to zero. Congress is too busy arguing amongst themselves over whose turn it is to kick the proverbial can.
