Recently there was an article in the Independent about there not being enough commercial development in Plymouth and how that would help expand our tax base. I am in favor of commercial development and its benefits. The reality is that there are commercial locations in this town that have been developed and are vacant not because of town government but because this is happening all over the country. One just has to look at the vacancies in Plymouth Center, empty stores at The Grove (formerly Shops at 5), the crater in North Plymouth, the abandoned Benny’s Plaza, and the empty storefronts built adjacent to the Market Basket that have never been occupied – just to name a few.
Before we build new and talk about electing a mayor and all the expense that would entail, there has to be a way of utilizing the present vacant commercial inventory. I don’t have the answer but believing that if we build more they will come, does not sound like a viable solution.
